Stay Green! Case Study

Case Study

Summary

Stay Green was a self-initiated case study that quickly became one of my forever favorites. What started as a simple curiosity about why so many people struggle to keep their plants alive turned into a deeper exploration of empathy, habits, and care. The goal was to design an app that helps people take better care of their plants by making the process feel intuitive, conversational, and rewarding. It combined product design, UX research, and interface design, but more importantly, it was about creating a small digital companion that gives a voice to something that can’t speak for itself.

The Context

It all started with a simple observation: plants are the quietest roommates we have.
They depend on four simple elements to stay alive: light, water, nutrients, and temperature.
And yet, despite being surrounded by them, we often forget they’re living beings with needs of their own.

In our world of fast routines and short attention spans, plants often become silent victims of neglect, not because people don’t care, but because they don’t know how to care.

That’s where Stay Green! was born… a small idea with a big heart: to help people listen to what their plants are trying to say.

The Objective

In this chaotic hustle culture, humans are busy surviving, and plants are quietly dying.
My goal was to give plants the attention they deserve and help owners form an easier, more joyful relationship with them.

The Problem

Unlike pets or people, plants don’t have a voice to ask for help or legs to move when something’s wrong.
They can’t tell you they’re thirsty or too cold; they just start to fade.
So, the real problem wasn’t a lack of interest; it was a lack of communication.

So I wondered:

How can we help plants to communicate their needs?

Step 1: Empathise

To design a solution, I needed to see how people actually take care of their plants.
I dove deep into research:

  • Read over 10 articles about plant behavior and care

  • Conducted an online survey about people’s habits

  • Benchmarked 6 competitors in the market

Key Insights:

  • Most people forget their plants’ names

  • They often water plants based on their own mood, not the plant’s actual need

  • “Watering” is treated as a habit, not a biological process, often causing overwatering

  • The way people think and what plants actually need are rarely aligned

That’s when I realized: the goal isn’t to teach people about plants, it’s to design a dialogue between them.

Step 2: Define

People already want to take care of their plants; they just need better guidance.

So I framed the challenge as:

How might we help plant owners understand and respond to their plants’ real needs, so their plants can stay green and healthy?

To make this relatable, I compared it to pet care.
Before adopting a pet, you learn about its needs, prepare the space, and adapt your lifestyle.
But when it comes to plants, people often skip that, and the plant ends up being “decor” instead of a companion.

Step 3: Design

Then came the spark:

What if plants could talk?

Imagine your plant gently saying:

“Hey, I’m thirsty.”
“I love this sunlight.”
“I think I’m growing faster thanks to you.”

That’s how Stay Green turned into a conversational app, one that makes plant care as intuitive as chatting with a friend.

The design centered around six key features:

  • Pre-defined tasks & reminders for watering, sunlight, and nutrients

  • Conversational learning to make plant care interactive

  • Growth tracking with visual progress

  • Online shop for plant accessories and nutrients

  • Plant identifier through camera

  • Disease diagnosis using image recognition

Each flow was crafted to remove friction and make the experience enjoyable, even for users who tend to forget or procrastinate.

Visual References & Mood Direction

Before designing the interface, I collected a set of visual references to define the tone and atmosphere of Stay Green!, a balance between freshness, calmness, and everyday warmth.
The inspiration came from natural textures, plant labels, and interior palettes that reflect serenity and growth, guiding both the UI color system and overall feel of the experience.

What’s Next

The future vision for Stay Green goes beyond just plant reminders.
It’s about helping both humans and plants grow together.

The next phase includes:

  • Personal growth challenges that pair your wellness habits with your plant’s growth

  • An intelligent pot that tracks the four life factors, light, water, nutrients, and temperature, syncing real-time data directly to the app.

Imagine looking at your phone and your plant literally tells you how it feels.
That’s the dream, to make caring effortless and meaningful again.

Reflection

Designing Stay Green! reminded me that empathy doesn’t always start with people; sometimes it starts with nature. The kind of impact you want to make in this world shapes your path, and you’ll find your way through it.

“Understanding the needs of your plants leads to less stress, cleaner air, and a happier environment.”
